Islamabad: The world’s largest search engine and video-sharing platform – Google – is all set to open a liaison office in Pakistan, according to news published on December 10.

Information Technology (IT) and Telecom Minister Syed Aminul Haque on Friday (December 9) announced that the global giant has been registered as a company in Pakistan. It was mentioned that a delegation from Google Singapore will visit the country next week and the company will announce setting up a functional office in the country. He went on to say that TikTok has also agreed to set up a liaison office. While Facebook and Twitter have expressed the inability to open offices in Pakistan, Google has taken the lead and has registered itself with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).
As per the details, registration of the company is the first step towards the establishment of the office, according to the requirements under the Removal and Blocking of Unlawful Online Content Rules 2021. The news source mentioned that the social media platforms will have to abide by the laws and norms of the country after getting registered and opening its offices.

Moreover, the rules also require social media platforms to have secure servers in the country to ensure that the data was well-protected. Currently, the data of all the platforms are stored outside the country. In another development, Foreign Minister (FM) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari visited the Asia Pacific headquarters of Meta (Facebook), Singapore for the launch of the ‘Stars Programme’ for monetisation in Pakistan. As per the details, the programme will contribute to the capacity building of young entrepreneurs.
