Islamabad: The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) and Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) have announced their plan to launch the ‘Go Green Islamabad’ campaign; under which they expect to plant 10 million tree saplings in the federal capital — a news source reported.

The campaign was formally launched on December 25, and ICT Deputy Commissioner (DC) Hamza Shafqaat and ICCI President Ahmed Waheed marked the occasion by planting a tree in front of the ICCI building. Speaking at the ceremony, the ICT DC stated that the ICCI was one of the first business chambers of Pakistan to plant a million trees, and were inspired to do so by Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Green Pakistan initiative.

DC Shafqaat assured the ICCI of his full cooperation to ensure the tree planting campaign is a success. The ICT administration will help by identifying the optimal locations to plant trees around the capital city. ICCI President Waheed said that the ‘Go Green Islamabad’ campaign had been launched in order to help achieve the PM’s target of planting 10 billion trees during the five year tenure of the current government.

Waheed further announced that the ICCI will also try to convince the Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation, Capital Development Authority, Islamabad Police, schools, diplomats and other organisations to contribute to the campaign in order to ensure its success. He also extended an invitation to any other institutions that were looking to become part of the ‘Go Green Islamabad’ campaign.
