Gilgit: The National Highway Authority (NHA) on Sunday announced that it would construct protective walls along the Karakoram Highway (KKH) for ensuring its safety against flooding, a news source reported.

Earlier, a glacial lake outburst flood had damaged part of the KKH in Hassanabad, Hunza. The NHA officials visited the area to inspect the ongoing rehabilitation works on this part of the highway. Talking to the media, NHA Gilgit Baltistan (GB) General Manager (GM) Muhammad Ibrahim stated that the protective walls would ensure the safety of KKH and the properties of the local community.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Hunza Fayaz Ahmed said that department concerned has formed a committee that would assess the need for protective walls. He added that the authorities concerned had also mobilised machinery to rehabilitate the damaged parts of the KKH due to the flooding and for the protection of the Hassanabad Bridge.

The DC further revealed that the Public Works Department had initiated the rehabilitation work of the area’s damaged drinking water supply lines, the headway of the Hassanabad Power House, and local water channels. He added that the department would also compensate the local community following the preparation of detailed assessments on the damages induced by flooding to forests, cultivated lands, and other properties.
