Lahore: The General Head Quarters (GHQ) has proposed to the federal government the construction of a 0.7 million tonne strategic petroleum reserve (SPR) at Gwadar, Pakistan’s coastal metropolis, news sources reported on April 12. The planned facility will enhance the maximum SPR by 30 days.

According to reports, the GHQ suggested the SPR, citing the necessity for diversification of the country’s oil reserves and greater development along the country’s coast. Furthermore, the Ministry of Defense has suggested building 2 million tonnes of SPR in Karachi, Hub, and Mehmood Kot. The Hub facility would have 1 million tonnes of storage capacity, followed by 0.7 million tonnes at the Karachi facility and 0.3 million tonnes in Mehmood Kot.

According to a paper issued by GHQ to the federal government, the military services intend to improve strategic resilience, diversify oil supplies, and minimise congestion and dependency on the Karachi SPR. Furthermore, the proposed plan calls for the construction of a pipeline between the Karachi SPR and Mehmood Kot to increase the flow of imported fuel.
