Islamabad: The federal cabinet has approved subsidized rates for power and gas supplied to five export-oriented sectors to make them competitive in the international market, according to news published on August 12.

As per the new subsidized rates, power and gas will be provided at 9 cents per kilowatt and USD 9 per MMBtu to the specified sectors. The new rates announced for the regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) will be effective from July 01, whereas new power rates will be charged from August 1 – till the end of the current fiscal year.

It was highlighted that the cabinet had approved the subsidy on electricity and gas was announced on August 5, however, a notification from the government was yet to be issued. Under the budgetary division, the government allocated a subsidy of PKR 40 billion for gas and PKR 20 billion for power. Additionally, the government has discarded the proposal of imposing indigenous gas tariffs of PKR 1,350 and PKR 1,550 per MMBtu for export and general industry, in order.
