The recent inclusion of Gilgit Baltistan in this renowned list follows an upward trend in the region’s tourism. In August 2024, Pakistan introduced online visas for citizens of more than 120 countries, further facilitating access to this remote and stunning part of the world. The Financial Times also mentioned a guided 14-day group tour available to travelers, offering a deep immersion into the culture, history, and natural beauty of the region, with six days dedicated to trekking.
The recognition by Financial Times comes shortly after US-based CNN included Gilgit Baltistan in its list of the top 25 travel destinations for 2025, underscoring the region’s growing appeal. CNN Travel referred to the area as “home to five of the 14 eight-thousanders,” referring to the world’s highest peaks, including K2, the second-highest mountain in the world and considered one of the most challenging and dangerous climbs.
Tourism in Gilgit Baltistan continues to flourish, with thousands of local and international tourists visiting each year for activities like mountaineering, trekking, and paragliding. However, despite the region’s growing popularity, it is not without its challenges.
