Islamabad: The Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) on Monday (January 17) was awarded the contract for the expansion of a 2-kilometre portion of Islamabad Expressway, from Korang Bridge to PWD Interchange, according to media reports.

As per the details shared, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) called tenders under Rule 42(f) of the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA). According to the rules, only government companies could participate in the bidding process. The FWO submitted the lowest bid of PKR 2.3 billion while the National Logistics Cell (NLC) submitted the bid of PKR 2.4 billion.
A CDA senior official stated that the authority wants the project to be completed as early as possible due to the traffic congestion and difficulties faced by motorists on daily basis.
Reportedly, the 2-kilometre long road from Korang Bridge to PWD Underpass and Railway Bridge will be constructed in 15-months. The expressway is one of the busiest roads because of the increase in the number of housing societies along its length. But, mainly because of the sudden transformation of the four-lane highway into two-lane at Korang bridge.

Presently, construction work on the widening of Korang Bridge is undergoing and is expected to be complete by April. The CDA is also planning to expand the remaining 7-kilometre long road from PWD to G.T. Road to address the traffic problems.
