Peshawar: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Highways Council on Tuesday (October 5) approved funds of PKR 1.672 billion for the annual maintenance plan of Pakhtunkhwa Highways Authority (PKHA), according to news sources.

Chief Minister (CM) Mahmood Khan presided over the council’s meeting and ordered KPHA officials to submit a report on the funds’ allocation and maintenance work completed last year. During the meeting, it was decided that the budget for maintenance of the road network should be presented to the provincial cabinet for approval.
As per the details, the approved funds will be used for the maintenance of 3,000 kilometres of roads and highways in the province. It will include rehabilitation of flood-affected roads, construction of new toll plazas, and other operational work. Moreover, the meeting discussed having an effective mechanism to control the overloading of freight vehicles on PKHA managed highways. Also, the meeting approved the provincialisation of four roads for proper maintenance and management. The roads include:
- 126-kilometre Topi-Buner road
- 85-kilometre Thakot-Darband road
- 61-kilometre Bannu-Miranshah road
- 35-kilometre Sheringal-Patrak road
Additionally, the meeting was briefed on the new projects of highways and roads under the Annual Development Programme (ADP). It was reported that 6 highway projects, with a total cost of more than PKR 6 billion were included in ADP. PKHA have included two major road projects in Accelerated Implementation Programme (AIP), which includes:
- Rehabilitation of Thal-Parachinar road, at the cost of PKR 8.6 billion
- Dualization of Bannu-Miranshah road

CM Khan stated that timely completion of road and highways projects should be ensured to provide quality transportation facilities to the people.
