Reportedly, an agreement was signed between the Walled City Lahore Authority (WCLA) and the Agence Française de Développement (French Development Agency). The French bank will provide assistance of EUR 22 million over a period of five years under HURL. The project includes the renovation of Lahore Fort and its buffer zone, which also includes the old food street behind the fort, Taxali, and adjacent parks.
Moreover, explaining the aims and objectives of the project, the French Ambassador to Pakistan Nicolas Galey said that the project will restore the UNESCO heritage site to its former glory and will also attract more tourists. It is worth noting that the Lahore Fort is an internationally recognised heritage monument, having been classified as a site of cultural significance by UNESCO in 1984. The WCLA was founded in 2012 to oversee the walled city’s issues, including restoration, managing the Fort and other monuments erected during the Mughal and British eras.
