Rawalpindi: The Forest Department has initiated the development of mini dams in forests located in the Rawalpindi district to control fire accidents, a news source reported. As per the publication, four mini dams have already been completed — with the structures designed to store rainwater.

In case of forest fires, the authorities concerned will use the water from the mini dams to extinguish fires, instead of bringing water from faraway places. Besides, to save the forests from accidental fires, the department has termed the time between April 16 and July 16 as ‘fire season’.

During the fire season, the carrying and use of axes, matchboxes, and cigarette lighters etc. in the forests of Murree, Margala, Kotli Sattian, Kallar Sayedan, Kahota, Chakwal, and Jehlum have been banned.

To improve security further, the forest guards will be provided with motorcycles, walkie talkies, uniforms, and munitions, while the most important forests will be supplied with close circuit cameras. Moreover, additional mini dams will be built in the seven tehsils of Rawalpindi, and strict security will be maintained throughout the fire season.
