The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government always emphasises on tax collection and incites this issue on various forums from time to time. Now the KP government is eyeing the real estate sector of the province to collect property taxes from owners of 5-marla plots across the province.
The Excise and Taxation Department of KP has also served tax notices to 5-marla plots owners. The preceding governments of the province had exempted the owners of 5-marla plots from property tax payment, but the current government does not plan to give any exemption.
According to a news source, the said tax levy incited confusion among the public, however, Excise and Taxation Department Director General Mr Javed Marwat justified the government’s stance by telling reporters that the matter had been misreported in the media, as the tax notices were served as per schedule.
Mr Marwat also told that the anterior governments had exempted 5-marla property owners on a condition that the properties were actually occupied by the original owners and also that any owner of a 5-marla property did not own any other building or plot.
The news source reported further that the KP Excise and Taxation Department had sent notices to property owners who were either using their plots for commercial purposes or owned other property units as well.
I understand that the levy of taxes is likely to be an unfavourable news for related property owners. I would like you to share your views on the KP government’s plan to levy property taxes on 5-marla plots owners in the comments section below.
