Lahore: Chairman Water & Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Lt Gen Muzammil Hussain (retd) on Wednesday (December 8) stated that the first unit of Mohmand Dam will start functioning by December 25, according to media reports.

WAPDA Chairman briefed the delegation of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives. The delegation also visited the project site of Mohmand Dam on River Swat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). During the visit, the delegation reviewed the progress of the project. It was disclosed that the construction work on 13 sites is being executed simultaneously, which includes spillway, power intake, access roads, re-regulation pond, switchyard, left bank irrigation tunnel, powerhouse, and diversion tunnels.
Moreover, the delegation was informed that Mohmand Dam is the fifth-highest concrete-face-rock-fill Dam (CFRD). It will store 1.2 million acre-feet of water and will reduce the risk of floods in Peshawar, Naushera, and Charsadda. With the help of the dam, 160,000 acres of existing and 18,237 acres of new land will be irrigated.

Reportedly, Mohmand Dam Power House will produce 800-megawatt (MW) hydel electricity, which will contribute 2.86 billion units of low-cost hydel electricity to the national grid. Besides this, the dam will provide 300 million gallons of water per day to Peshawar for drinking purposes.
