Karachi: Renowned Pakistani haematologist and head of the National Institute of Blood Diseases, Dr Tahir Shamsi on Saturday reported on a successful clinical trial of passive immunisation after the country’s first COVID-19 patient made a recovery through plasma therapy, according to news sources. He further confirmed that the patient had been discharged from hospital.

He revealed that several patients suffering from coronavirus are currently being treated with plasma therapy. He said that the authorities concerned had identified 350 patients for clinical trial of plasma therapy treatment.

The eight approved clinical trial facilities for convalescent plasma across Pakistan have initiated the process of collecting plasma of recovered patients. Dr Shamsi clarified that this development could not be declared as an approved coronavirus treatment, since it functions as a successful clinical trial at this stage.
According to Dr Shamsi; passive immunisation therapy has been used to cure patients of diseases like Ebola, SARS, and influenza in the past.
