LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed the formation of a working group to explore the feasibility of launching a bullet train service between Lahore and Rawalpindi. The announcement was made in a press release issued by the provincial government, confirming that the initiative is part of the Punjab government’s broader transport modernization plans.

A preliminary meeting for the project was held, featuring Federal Railway Minister Hanif Abbasi and Senior Punjab Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb. During this session, the working group was tasked with preparing a detailed feasibility study, including a timeline for implementation. The group comprises Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan, CM Advisor Shahid Tarar, and senior railway officials, who are expected to present their findings within a week.
The project will also explore potential new routes for bullet trains within Punjab. The working group was briefed on the current rail network and the condition of railway tracks, with the upgrade of the Lahore and Rawalpindi railway stations included in the scope.

While experts suggest that the project could cost over $10 billion, with per kilometer costs for high-speed rail estimated at $40 to $50 million, the government has not yet confirmed how these funds will be secured. Nonetheless, the feasibility study is expected to provide clarity on the project’s financial and logistical viability.
