Karachi: The Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) Broadening of Tax Base (BTB) unit recently issued notices to 250,000 commercial and industrial power and gas consumers in Karachi, a news source reported. Chief Commissioner Regional Tax Office Karachi, and head of the BTB unit, Badruddin Qureshi said that the information for these 250,000 unregistered users was gathered with the help of Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), and K-Electric.

Qureshi stated that using their databases, the FBR gathered information on 8,000 defaulters in SSGC, and 0.6 million in K-Electric. After repeated entries were removed, the remaining consumers were issued notices under section 176 of the Income Tax Ordinance of 2001. This was done against their billing for the month of July 2019. He added that the board had also issued 10,000 notices to unregistered people based on property, bank and auto details under section 114 of the same ordinance, using their centralised system.

The Chief Commissioner further said that the FBR has been able to register even more tax returns after they sent volunteers to help and guide non-filers in their work places in an attempt to make the process even easier.
