Karachi: The Karachi Tax Bar Association (KTBA) has urged the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to extend the sales tax return filing deadline to March 28, 2025, citing technical issues with the IRIS portal that are hindering compliance.
In a letter to the FBR chairman, KTBA highlighted system errors following recent updates, making it difficult for taxpayers to submit returns on time. The letter pointed out that the IRIS portal has not updated templates to reflect the extension of Harmonized System (HS) codes from 4 to 8 digits, creating classification challenges for businesses with diverse product lines.

Additionally, KTBA raised concerns over the mandatory linking of Units of Measurement (UoM) with HS codes, stating that the portal lacks commonly used units such as tons, liters, and grams. The association argued that this requirement is impractical and complicates accurate reporting.
Given these issues, KTBA has urged FBR to address the technical faults while extending the deadline, ensuring businesses have sufficient time to comply once the portal functions properly.
