Gujranwala: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has decided to collect income tax from farmers and landowners for the years 2012-2018, reported a news source. The board is looking to collect PKR 100 million from farmers of six districts in Gujranwala; Sialkot, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin and Hafizabad.

FBR has assigned the recovery task to the Revenue Department. The department has complete legal authority to initiate a crackdown against farmers defaulting on income tax. Reportedly, influential landowners and big farmers in these districts have been generating annual income worth billions but haven’t paid income tax since 2012.

To run the campaign effectively, the recovery task is assigned to the deputy commissioner of each district. The sources also confirm that the local government has formed tax recovery teams comprising tehsildar, qanoongo and patwaris. These officers will deliver notices and convince farmers to clear the pending dues.
In the case of non-payment, the Revenue Department will take legal action as specified by the FBR Act.
