The Pakistan Tax Bar Association (PTBA) recently requested the FBR to provide another extension in the deadline; asking the latter to set December 31 as the revised expiry date. In a letter addressed to the federal institution, the association said that filing 1.6 million returns was an ‘enormous task’ which was ‘difficult to complete till October 31’. The count for returns filed only recently crossed 900,000 around October 25 – and this figure accounted for about 65% of the number of returns filed during the tax year 2018, the statement read.

The PTBA said that since traders were observing a shutter down strike during the last days of October, people might have trouble completing the tax-submissions process. Further, it stated that the current political situation of the country might hinder the process of e-filing of returns during this month.
