Islamabad: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) – despite having received less than 1.5 million returns – has ruled out the possibility of any further extension in the deadline for filing income tax returns, as per a news report published on December 8. The last date for filing returns is set to expire today.

According to the details revealed, a high-ranking FBR official stated that the taxation authority had so far recorded 1.5 million returns; adding that a total of 2.9 million returns were filed during the last fiscal year. The lag in the number of returns is associated with the ongoing second wave of COVID-19, he said.
However, in a bid to facilitate the taxpayers (who couldn’t file their returns), the board has issued directives to all Inland Revenue field formations to establish help desks to receive manual requests for the extension in filing income tax returns. All chief commissioners have been asked to be generous about giving extensions and submit a report on all these requests submitted and approved by the chief commissioner to the FBR Headquarters by December 10.

The taxpayers have been asked to submit their applications to the respective chief commissioners with their name, identity card number, National Tax Number (NTN), and the identification of jurisdiction. Moreover, it was highlighted that one request for extension addressed to the chief commissioner Inland Revenue could cover multiple taxpayers. The FBR has clarified that the online option for filing returns shall remain available.
