Lahore: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and the Punjab Excise & Taxation department have signed an agreement to share ‘read-only’ tax records online — with the initiative aimed at making a collaborative effort to curb tax evasion in the country, a news source reported on August 10. The representatives of both agencies are expected to sign a formal agreement during an event in Lahore next week.

Through this agreement, the FBR hopes to nab tax evaders by utilizing the Excise department’s records to check for an individuals’ motor vehicle registration and property tax details. The tax authority is expecting to go through the data available for luxury vehicles and properties in order to compare these records with its own tax payers list to find potential tax evaders.

On the other hand, the Excise department will be able to benefit from the said agreement by identifying individuals who fall within the ambit of the professional tax net, but have failed to pay it so far.
In the next phase, the Excise department plans on requesting for access to the FBR’s one-custom system.
