Islamabad: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has sent notices to 228 boutiques and garment shops; asking them to get registered with the taxation department on a priority basis – a news source reported. The names of these shops came to light after a thorough inspection of data which showed that they had not been registered with the sales tax department and the income tax department.

Instructions have been given to field officers to identify outlets and businesses earning large profits without being registered with the FBR, a spokesperson told the press. He further stated that the regional tax offices had been given similar directives to identify such shops across the country and issue notices to them on an urgent basis.

Previously, the FBR had announced that only registered businesses were liable to charge sales tax to their customers. To check for fraud, customers can look for a sales tax registration number printed on the receipt issued to them. If a business is not registered, there will be no sales tax registration number placed on the receipt.
