Islamabad: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has issued notices to some 800,000 taxpayers who failed to file income tax returns before the Tax Year (TY 2019-2020) deadline which expired on December 8, according to a news report published on December 17.

In an unprecedented development, the top officials of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) decided to penalise the taxpayers who had filed their returns regularly in the past. These notices were served through the e-filing system IRIS.
As per the FBR data, over 300,000 taxpayers had sought extension in the filing date and these people were given a grace period of 15 days to file their returns and avoid penalty of PKR 40,000.

FBR spokesperson Nadeem Rizvi stated that non-filers were required to submit an extension application within the due date to get more time. He added that all extension applications that were submitted before the deadline expired had been accepted and people were issued grace time to file their returns until December 24.
