Karachi: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has initiated an investigation against wealthy doctors operating in the city, a news reported. To this effect, the federal institution has announced its decision to launch the probe against medical practitioners who have misreported on their wealth statements.

For this purpose, the FBR has sought the data pertaining to the doctors belonging to the top-most hospitals in Karachi. During the first phase of the investigation’s proceedings, the taxation agency has brought doctors from 17 top healthcare institutions in Karachi under its radar.
Additionally, the board will also investigate doctors found running private clinics in addition to practicing at major hospitals. These will include doctors from both the private and government sectors.
According to reports, the FBR already has access to the banking details and out-of-country flight schedules of the doctors. In a related development, the board recently imposed a fine of PKR 25,000 on Ziauddin Memorial Hospital for not complying with its directives.

On the other hand, FBR officials informed the National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee on Finance on tax refund matters last week. The officials stated that board had reported on its tax refund of over PKR 3 billion collected during the current month.
