Islamabad: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has informed Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan regarding the increase recorded in the number of tax filers during the completion of the incumbent government’s first year, according to a news source. The board officials presented a report which revealed that the number of new tax filers had more than tripled in the said time period.

According to the data shared, as many as 783,039 filed their tax returns as a result of various initiatives; such as the amnesty schemes, offered by the government. These new filers contributed PKR 2.583 billion in tax returns. This increase in the tax filers’ number was seen as an encouraging development, especially compared to last year, where only 190,391 new tax filers were registered.

The total number of tax filers went up by 69.1% (from 1.514 million to 2.561 million) between 2017 and 2018. FBR Chairman Shabbar Zaidi, along with a tax team, explained these statistics to the PM. They also apprised him of the measures to be taken in the future to improve the taxation mechanisms of Pakistan.
