Lahore: The Supreme Court (SC) has given the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) only 15 days to complete its investigation regarding a case of undue tax refunds allegedly provided to non-deserving individuals/recipients, a news source reported. As per the publication, the three-member bench consolidated to hear the case was headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed.

FBR Acting Chairperson Nosheen Javed Amjad informed the court that they had initiated the inquiry into tax refund irregularities following the approval from the Prime Minister (PM)’s Office. The Chief Justice expressed his concern over FBR not completing the inquiry within the provided three-month judicial period.
The court has now provided the taxation authority with a period of another 15 days to conclude the investigation. Meanwhile, FBR has continued its action against individuals suspected of tax fraud via ghost companies and fake accounts.

In May 2019, FBR’s Directorate General of Broadening of Tax Base had discovered massive sales and income tax fraud through a network of fake accounts in the sugar and textile sectors. The racket comprised ghost entities in these sectors that were involved in making fake sales.
