Islamabad: Advisor to Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue Dr Hafeez Shaikh on Wednesday directed Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairperson Shabbar Zaidi to fast track tax refunds to facilitate the local business community, according to news sources.

He made this announcement after a virtual meeting with the business community, where he assured them of the government’s support in these tough times. The advisor also expressed his hope for a brighter future for the national export sector, once the COVID-19 pandemic is over.

Reportedly, the business community had asked for expedited refunds of sales tax, as this would provide them with the liquidity required to manage their businesses. In addition, the meeting discussed the status of various industries amid the global slump, and came to the conclusion that small business enterprises and daily wagers had been the worst affected segments during this COVID-19 pandemic.
The meeting further discussed a proposal concerning the distribution of PKR 200 billion to support daily wagers and labourers under the Prime Minister’s relief package. The representatives of the business community also took the opportunity to resolve to support labourers, fulfil their social obligations, and assist the government in its fight against the pandemic affecting the country.
