Karachi: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) announced on Thursday the constitution of a committee to resolve issues with the Sindh tax authority over the revenue collection from vehicles, according to news sources.

The committee comprises of Regional Tax Office-II chief commissioner and member taxpayers audit, and Excise and Taxation Secretary Ahmad Balal to smoothen the withholding tax collection issue.
The Sindh motor vehicle authority collects withholding tax on registration of new motor vehicles and transfer of registration – as withholding agent under the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001. Previously the collection of tax was performed by the provincial Excise and Taxation department but was delegated as per the decision of the provincial cabinet, last year.

The FBR stated that collection and deposit of tax is a procedural matter and is governed by constitutional law, and therefore should be performed by the Excise and Taxation Department. This newly-formed committee is aimed at sorting out the said issues and will file a monthly implementation report till a joint resolution is reached over all issues. The report will be presented to the Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and the Adviser to Chief Minister on Revenue and Finance.
