Karachi: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) aims to increase the number of income tax return filers from the 2.1 million figure recorded in 2018 to five million within the next two years, a news source reported. Chief Commissioner Inland Revenue, Regional Tax Office (RTO)-II Karachi Badar-ud-Din Ahmad Qureshi made this announcement on Friday, adding that the board was currently implementing various measures to encourage people to file their returns after paying taxes.

One of the measures being undertaken by the board is concerned with collaborating with provincial government departments and large companies to ensure that their employees file their tax returns. The FBR had earlier taken note of the issue that large organisations like the Pakistan Railways or the National Bank of Pakistan had several employees who were paying taxes without documenting their returns in the board’s prescribed forms.

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) reported a similar failing – informing that only 6,500 of its 68,000 registered tax payers had actively filed their tax returns as per its last assessment.
The FBR had earlier been facing difficulties pertaining to the enforcement of its policies due to a shortage of manpower, so it had decided to reach out to several non-governmental organisations (NGO) for assistance.
