Faisalabad: The Irrigation Department of Faisalabad on Tuesday has announced its decision to desilt and rehabilitate its canals with an estimated cost of PKR 3.25 billion, according to news sources.

Reportedly, the desilting work will be carried out under three phases. The department has also announced that it will launch an extensive crackdown against water theft, and hefty fines will be imposed on those found guilty.
A spokesperson for the irrigation department has said that these measures will help end-users in gaining access to water for irrigation which will in return help in bringing a green revolution in the zone. The official highlighted that as 1.8 million acres of land is under irrigation, there is a need to repair and rehabilitate the canal system.

Moreover, the spokesperson said that PKR 2 billion will be spent on de-silting, repair and rehabilitation of the Jhang Branch Canal. Repair work will include the reconstruction of bridges to increase the flow of water, and avoid any wastage. Similarly, PKR 900 million has been allocated for the rehabilitation work on the Chiniot distributary, while PKR 350 million have been allocated for rehabilitation work on Dijikot Drain.
