Lahore: The Environment Protection Department (EPD) and Lahore Chambers of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) have finalised the details on an agreement according to which, the factories that will not release their untreated waste water in Hudiara Drain will not face legal charges, reported a news source. The legal action to be taken against such factories polluting Hudiara Drain are subject to the guarantee of the LCCI.
The dozens of factories located along Hudiara Drain were served notices and later sealed in the past for releasing their untreated industrial waste into the drain. The EPD was later approached by the LCCI members to unseal these units.
To fix the situation, the EPD Secretary Dr. Zaffar Nasrullah held a meeting members of the LCCI. During this meeting, it was decided that department will not take actions against the factories for which the LCCI will provide guarantee that the unit will set up their water treatment plants.
Reportedly, the LCCI will instruct the factory owners to set up water treatment plants and the chamber will join the EPD to carry out legal proceeding against factory owners that will channel untreated water into the drain.
