Islamabad: The federal cabinet on Tuesday banned the export of all edible items with an aim to secure a sufficient supply of food for the local market amid the ongoing coronavirus lockdown in the country, according to news sources.

In addition, the cabinet granted three more weeks to the inquiry commission for conducting a forensic audit of recently reported sugar and wheat scams.
Minister of Information Shibli Faraz revealed that Prime Minister Imran Khan was of the view that the export of essential food items should be banned until the coronavirus situation had been neutralized — in an attempt to secure adequate food supply within the country. However, the minister added that Afghan transit trade would still continue.

Previously, the Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Accountability and Interior Mirza Shahzad Akbar had said that three more weeks were needed in order to prepare the aforementioned forensic report (originally due on April 25). Reportedly, the authorities concerned did not find it feasible to audit all the sugar and wheat mills under the ongoing lockdown.
