Gujrat: Gujrat Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dr Khurram Shehzad recently announced that 27 historical sites had been identified in the city for rehabilitation work to increase local tourism — with the initiative falling under the auspices of the ‘Explore Gujrat’ programme, according to a new source.

The DC shared this information while presiding over a meeting held with the District Tourism Company. Senior officials from Gujrat also attended the meeting to discuss the programme, which is part of the Prime Minister’s Clean and Green Index initiative. Addressing the attendees, DC Shehzad revealed that a bike rally would also be held in February as part of the ‘Explore Gujrat’ plan.

The identified historical sites in the city include nine buildings from the Mughal period, ten from the Sikh Era and eight Hindu temples. The commissioner added that Ram Piyari Mehal would be the first site to be rehabilitated under this programme.

The district administration has requested funds from the Punjab government to rehabilitate Akbari Qila and Shahdola Gate. The DC also mentioned that the rehabilitation work on the selected sites is expected to be carried out by the Punjab Archaeological Department.
