Karachi: Several environmental experts on Tuesday stated that the 10-kilometre-long Lyari Expressway was feasible for planting 100,000 trees, a news source reported. They indicated that the expressway – constructed on both sides of the Lyari River – had the potential to minimise environmental concerns in the metropolis.

They pointed out that the Lyari River, which flows through the centre of the city, was a natural water body, which could provide fertilizers and moisture to facilitate the growth of trees – allowing the authorities concerned to plant 100,000 trees along this stretch of land.
They further stated that both the public and private sectors could play their part on this front in order to reduce heat intensity; adding that similar campaigns could be initiated along the Malir River.

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Pakistan Technical Director Muazam Khan said that Lyari River was a form of surface water. He added that the proposed campaign would have a positive impact on the environment and biodiversity, along with boosting bird population. Moreover, he stressed on the need to plant trees compatible with the local environment.
