Islamabad: World Bank (WB) Programme Lead Public Sector Specialist Clelia Rontoyanni, while addressing a consultative dialogue session titled ‘Textile Sector’s Competitiveness amid COVID-19’ on Tuesday, suggested that the government and the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) could take a number of measures to boost the textile sector, a news source reported.

Rontoyanni also highlighted various aspects of support for competitiveness in the textile businesses. She pointed out several measures already taken by the government like reduction in sales taxes, custom duty and making it easier to file taxes – all of which have helped the sector improve its competitiveness despite the coronavirus pandemic.

She revealed that two-thirds of the inputs for the manufacturing sector are imports, which is why the tariffs should be lowered. Other speakers at the dialogue also spoke of similar measures needed to enhance the competitivity of the textile businesses and boost its exports.
