Lahore: The excise department has announced its decision to suspend the issuance of smart registration cards till further notice due to the novel coronavirus pandemic; further stating that about 400,000 cards have yet to be issued, a news source reported. The preparation of the registration cards came to a halt in the wake of public office closures.

The number of smart cards on hold is expected to rise over the period of lockdown currently underway throughout the country.

Speaking on the matter, Excise Department Director General Sohail Shahzad said that necessary steps had to be taken for the protection of the excise officials including those involved in the process of preparing the smart cards. Now that both federal and provincial governments have announced the closure of public offices, smart cards cannot be prepared anymore.
The service will resume once the lockdown ends, he said.
