The EU announcement came in the wake of a signing ceremony pertaining to two financing agreements held in Islamabad on Friday. Economic Affairs Secretary Noor Ahmed and EU Ambassador Androulla Kaminara were present at the occasion.
As per the agreements, the EU has pledged to provide 40 million euros to find a five-year programme (scheduled for launch in 2021) to resolve the persisting water issues in Balochistan. The said programme will ‘contribute to transition in the arid regions of Balochistan towards sustainable, low water-intensive agricultural and livestock farming systems’.

Moreover, the initiative will incentivise the smart use of water for farmers and harness the potential of livestock by supporting sustainable rangelands management, with a focus on vulnerable groups. This programme will both increase productivity and improve groundwater recharge in the medium to long term.
