Rawalpindi: The Excise & Taxation (E&T) Department has begun issuing warrants for the arrest of tenants in a bid to recover property taxes from them (in the absence of landlords), a news source reported.
So far, the department has issued warrants for the arrest 349 tenants; of which 15 were recently arrested. As a result of this operation, the officials concerned have recovered property dues amounting to PKR 3.9 million.

The warrants have been issued for tenants of those properties whose landlords reside abroad, or are living in a different city. These property owners have yet to pay their property taxes.
Previously, the E&T department carried out a survey to identify such properties. Circle inspectors were told to submit their reports on an urgent basis. The department began issuing warrants after receiving the reports.
As per instructions previously communicated, in the absence of a landlord, the department has the authority to issue warrants in the tenant’s name who is, then, treated as the owner of the property.
