Islamabad: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday announced the establishment of a ‘gem, mineral and jewellery city’ to boost exports and bring the industry at par with international standards, news sources reported.
Engineer Gul Asghar Khan, the head of the authorities’ jewels and minerals task force, informed the premier about the sites chosen for the establishment of the planned gem city, as well as the potential and benefits of building such a gem processing facility in the country.

Furthermore, the premier stated that the worldwide market for gems and jewellery has a USD 5 billion yearly export potential, which would help stabilise the economy and create wealth for the locals. Reportedly, Pakistan is the world’s eighth-largest producer of gems.
Furthermore, the premier asked the relevant authorities to establish one window centre to resolve outstanding issues and conflict resolution in the proposed city.
It is important to note that initially the venture will be operated through a public-private partnership and relevant international certification will be obtained to standardise the gem processing procedures to make them more acceptable in the international market.

The meeting was also attended by the Chairman of the Gems and Jewellery Task Force, Engineer Gul Asghar Khan, as well as members and relevant authorities.
