Islamabad: The government on Thursday (June 11) imposed the Essential Services Act, 1952 on the Utility Stores Corporation (USC) to secure an ‘unhindered supply of food items to the masses’ and undertake preventative measures against any food emergency anticipated in the coming months, according to news sources.

The Essential Services Act will govern the USC for six months. In essence, the Act is applicable to every federal institution tasked with the provision of essential services to people in case of any emergencies and natural disasters. However, the corporation is only an entity supervised by the Ministry of Industries – where the Act has been imposed to prevent food emergency. The federal cabinet approved the imposition of law on June 2 and it could be extended till as needed.

Reportedly, the importance of the corporation has increased a lot in the aftermath of the novel coronavirus in Pakistan – and it has to maintain a supply of essentials in the country.
