Lahore: The Environment Protection Department (EPD) will be taking action against brick kilns not converting to zigzag technology by September 30, according to a news report. Environment Protection Secretary Salman Ijaz made an announcement regarding this matter on Wednesday.

The EPD finalised this decision at a high-level meeting chaired by Ijaz. Other members of the meeting included EPD Director General Irfan Nazir, EPD (EIA) Director General (DG) Naseemur Rehman Shah, Director Nusrat Naaz, as well as officers of the agriculture, forest, transport, and other relevant departments. Representatives from the brick kilns also attended this meeting to express their concerns.

The aim of this meeting was to prepare for the smog season, and review the performance of all departments in this matter. The cabinet will review a smog policy, with the consultation of all stakeholders. Currently, 300 kilns in Punjab have converted to zigzag technology, and all kilns will be completely shut down in the smog season at the end of October.
