Gujranwala: The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has shut down 242 industrial units on account of spreading pollution, a news source reported. EPA had earlier singled out 400 units found responsible for increasing environment pollution levels, and producing untreated wastewater.

EPA Director Waseem Ahsan Cheema and Senior Inspector Gulam Murtaza Bhatti took action in accordance with their instructions communicated.
In the first the first phase, the agency had conducted a survey to find factories, kilns, and furnaces responsible for the pollution. Four hundred units were found responsible for this.
The action was taken along Shiekhupura Road, GT Road and areas adjacent to these roads: Mian Sansi Road, Bakar Mandi, Sanat Road, Bajwa Road, Estate Number 1, and Estate Number 2.

Apart from shutting down the 242 units, 57 units were sent warning notices, while 30 cases have been referred to the environmental court to prosecute the culprits for heavy fines, and other punishments.
