Islamabad: The Environment Protection Agency (EPA)-Islamabad has launched a crackdown in the capital city to prevent the use of polythene bags, a news source reported on April 1.

To this effect, the agency has imposed fines of an accumulative PKR 210,000 and has confiscated polythene bags weighing 200 kilograms during the existing year. The EPA is determined to make Islamabad a plastic-bag-free city and has issued fines of up to PKR 70,000 in March. EPA Deputy Director Sadia Munawar revealed that four teams have been paying surprise visits in various markets and taking action against the defaulters. She revealed that the agency has imposed fines of up to PKR 560,000 on the violators in 2021.

It was highlighted that a fine of PKR 10,000 will be charged to shopkeepers selling goods in plastic bags, and a fine of PKR 100,000 will be imposed on plastic bags manufacturers. The EPA deputy director also said that the fine amount will be doubled for second-time offenders. Moreover, a fine of PKR 5,000 will be imposed on citizens found using plastic bags.
