Quetta: The Balochistan Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) imposed a complete ban on the sale, purchase, use and manufacture of polythene bags in the provincial capital on Wednesday – effective immediately, according to news sources.

As per the official notification issued by the EPA, the use of polythene bags in Quetta was an offence under the Balochistan Environmental Protection Act. The notice further warned that anyone who is found to be violating the law will be penalised under the said act.

Furthermore, about the penalties for violations, large-scale enterprises can be imposed with a fine ranging from PKR 100,000 to PKR 500,000. Similarly, the medium-sized enterprises can be fined between PKR 80,000 to PKR 200,000. As for the small-scale enterprises, the fine is decided at PKR 20,000 to PKR 150,000. According to the Provincial Environment Secretary Saboor Kakar, these fines will be imposed by the district administration and the Police Department.
