Lahore: Senior Punjab minister Abdul Aleem Khan has issued orders for setting up waste-to-energy conversion plants, a news source reported. The officials from respective municipal corporations have been directed to complete the project in one year.
The plants will be set up in six major cities of Punjab. These include Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and Rawalpindi. For this project, waste collected from Islamabad will also be utilised for energy production at the plant installed in Rawalpindi.
Khan shared further details on the project while presiding over a meeting held yesterday. The minister said that several international firms, including one from China, will be engaged for the project. In addition to power production, the plants will also yield gas and other useful materials from the waste input.
Khan added that the Punjab Government is looking to supply power produced from waste to Peshawar. The project is part of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Clean and Green Initiative. He said that it will also help reduce environmental pollution levels, and keep the cities clean.
The senior minister further informed that the project will be introduced in other provincial districts in its second phase.
