Islamabad: The billionaire tech entrepreneur; Elon Musk’s broadband internet firm representatives on Tuesday (December 14) met with Minister of Information Technology and Telecom Syed Amin-ul-Haque to open South Asia’s first office in Pakistan, according to news reports. Starlink, a SpaceX-owned and managed satellite constellation, will provide satellite internet services.

According to reports, a delegate led by Starlink’s director of the Middle East and Asia Ryan D Goodnight and the head of global site acquisition Ben Macwilliam met with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in Islamabad to discuss the proposal. The minister briefed company officials on the business prospects, teledensity and policies pertaining to the ease of doing business in Pakistan. Both parties recognise the need for expanded internet connectivity in Pakistan’s underserved communities. To streamline and accelerate work on the project, the firm, which is already registered in Pakistan, will open its first office.

Reportedly, SapceX has also shown interest in establishing Space of Things and Internet of Things in Pakistan. The minister also informed company representatives about the PM Digital Pakistan project and Broadband for All programmes, stating that internet users in the country are growing and that there is a strong need for quality internet services in the education and services sectors.
