Lahore: The Supreme Court (SC) issued notices based on an appeal by Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited (SNGPL) to the All Pakistan Textile Exporters Association (APTEA) and 46 industrial and commercial organisations challenging their use of personal gas supply for production of electricity, according to news sources.
The two-judge bench comprising Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Yahya Afridi took up the appeal at Lahore registry. Advocate Anwar Hussain, who represented the appeal, said that this act of electricity production from natural gas is a violation of the contract signed with SNGPL and Gas Allocation Policy 2005.

He stated that the gas cannot be used for any other purposes outside the connection contract and that this unlawful power generation will negatively impact the supply of millions of domestic consumers.
The counsel argued that the exporters association members are justifying their act by the misinterpretation of a judgement passed by the Lahore High Court (LHC) and should rather purchase electricity from distribution firms to meet their requirements.
He asked the bench to set the stay order by LHC aside and enable the SNGPL to take legal action against respondents.

The bench admitted this appeal for hearing and issued subsequent notices to respondents for a later date, as fixed by the registrar’s office.
