Gujrat: Under the federal government’s Clean and Green Pakistan Index (CGPI) initiative’s ‘Explore Gujrat’ section undertaking, all major historical and heritage sites of the district are expected to be restored, according to news sources. The local authorities have identified 80 such structures dating from the Mughal, Sikh, Hindu, and British periods.
An official stated that 34 of these sites would be restored on a timely basis; adding that a team of experts from the Punjab Archaeology Department will be engaged to rehabilitate these sites to beautify Gujrat. He further revealed that the restoration process would commence from the old fort that was built in 1587 – during Mughal Emperor Akbar’s reign.

The walled city of Gujrat originally had four gates — Kabuli, Kalri, Sheeshiyanwala and Shahdaula. The last of which exists, but is currently in shambles and its adjoining rooms are being repurposed as a police picket. The locals of the district said that the monument should be restored and preserved for future generations.

According to reports, the authorities concerned have announced their decision to reconstruct the replicas of the three remaining gates on the original sites in order to boost tourism potential and preserve the heritage of the area.
