Lahore: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has formed a committee to review Punjab’s local government (LG) law, a news source reported.

The committee includes Director General Law, Election Commissioner Punjab, and other officials from the Election Wing, and the Local Government Wing.
The committee will review the new law in relation to the Elections Act 2017. If conflict is found between the two laws, the Government of Punjab will be contracted to make appropriate amendments. Moreover, Lahore High Court will also be informed of the matter.
The Punjab Local Government Bill 2019 was presented in the Punjab Assembly in April; allowing the provincial government to establish a new local government system in the province.

According to the new system, the village council and mohalla council would be elected through non-party election system whereas, the election would be on a party basis at tehsil and municipal level. A system of tehsil and village councils would be established under the law.
