Islamabad: The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved the Main Line (ML-1) under the China-Pakistan-Economic-Corridor (CPEC), at the estimated cost of USD 9.85 billion, according to news published in the national dailies on November 1.

The news source mentioned that the ECNEC considered and approved the Ministry of Railway’s modified PC-1 for upgrading the existing ML-1 project. As per the details, the project will start from Karachi and pass through Kotri/Hyderabad, Multan, Rohri, Lahore, and Rawalpindi and ends at Peshawar.

Moreover, the ECNEC meeting also okayed Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) project, at the cost of PKR 292,388 million with a foreign share of PKR 263,149 million. Under this project, a 44-kilometre-long track, starting from Drig Road will be constructed. The dedicated train track will pass through the Federal B area, North Nazimabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Liaquatabad, Lyari, and SITE. The ECNEC also approved 48-megawatt (MW) Shounter Hydropower project in the Neelum district.
