Faisalabad: The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has provided its approval to the development of the ‘Eastern Wastewater Treatment Plant’ at a cost of PKR 19 billion to the city, a news source reported.

The initiative was sanctioned during an ECNEC meeting chaired by Advisor to the Prime Minister (PM) on Finance & Revenue Hafeez Sheikh. According to details, the plant would have a capacity of treating 44 million gallons of water daily.
During the meeting, Minister of State for Economic Affairs Hammad Azhar lauded the Faisalabad Water & Sanitation Agency (WASA) for executing and preparing projects through foreign funding. He appreciated the fact that these projects were larger than those implemented in other cities – adding that this was a sign of donor’s confidence in WASA and other public agencies.

According to information shared for the project, the proposed facility would reduce the degradation of aquifer and environment in the city. The treated water would be used for agricultural purposes through the Gugera Branch Canal. The project will also help in co-generating electricity via an anaerobic digester.
